Alva’s Healthy Banana Chia Seed Oat Bars


The recipe for these banana chia seed oat bars came from a determination to find a sugar free, healthy "treat" that could replace that mid afternoon or after dinner bar of chocolate or few biscuits. I had tried some really "super" healthy treats but to me they were just "so healthy" and pure they just didn't do it as a replacement for what I wanted. So after many attempts, I think this may be one of those perfect substitutes. They are healthy, sugar free with just a tablespoon of honey in a batch of 25 of them and taste great, oh and on top of all that they are simple to make! you just need a bowl and a spoon and the list of ingredients (which most of you will have in your press). They freeze great too so go on make a batch and enjoy! Ingredients

(I usually make double this quantity and freeze them)

  • 60 mls milk (almond milk for dairy free)
  • 3 tablespoons of chia seeds
  • 60 grams of butter melted (coconut oil for dairy free)
  • 1-2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 large ripe bananas
  • 125 grams of porridge oats
  • 60 grams of unsweetened coconut
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 60 grams of self raising flour (or a mix of whole-wheat and self raising)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder



In a bowl mix chia seeds, melted butter, milk, honey, and vanilla extract. Mash bananas and add to mixture. In another bowl mix dry ingredients. Add wet mixture to dry and stir well. Scoop batter into a greased pan and smooth out. Bake at 180 degrees Celsius for about 20 minutes, until it begins to go golden and it’s slightly firm to touch. Allow to cool fully before cutting into small bite size squares.
